Notes From the Pastor’s Study 9.21.2021

First Baptist Family,
I hope you are having a great week. I wanted to give you an update as to what is going on, particularly because our attendance was so low on Sunday, I’m afraid that many of you are out of the loop.

1. let’s make sure we are not missing church on Sunday mornings except for sickness or extenuating circumstances. I’m not trying to shame anyone, but It is incredibly discouraging for myself and all the members of the team who work hard to prepare, teach, lead, and facilitate worship and Sunday school when you decided to no-show. Never forget that your mere presence is a tremendous ministry in and of itself. Secondly, our gathering each week consistently is important and indispensable to our growth in Christ. When we attend or forsake the gathering of God’s people, it is a demonstration of our belief or unbelief, respectively, and a revelation of what we care most about. All of our formal and informal discipleship efforts build off our Sunday morning gathering. We can do better than what we are doing now. When the room is full it communicates to the Lord, to our people, and to visitors that we believe corporate worship is important.

2. If you are behind on your giving commitments, please get caught up and determine in your heart to be more consistent.

3. Sadly, our brother Neil Larimore passed away on Sunday evening at about 5:00 p.m. His funeral will be held in the Sanctuary on Wednesday (9/22) at 2 p.m. If you are able to be at the funeral, please be sure to attend this service. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. in the sanctuary prior to the service. Burial will follow at True Cemetery after the service. Read more here:

4. Our Marriage Conference with Steve and Debbie Wilson is October 3 from 12:30pm-5p.m. We are thrilled to bring back national conference speakers Steve and Debbie Wilson to our community.  The conference will be held on Sunday, October 3 from 12:30-5:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Olney Fellowship Hall.  The cost is $20 per couple (or individual), but scholarships are available for those who can’t afford the fee.
The conference this year is titled “Communication: The Missing Piece.” Steve and Debbie will use biblical principles to teach couples how to improve their communication skills. Those needing childcare will need to RSVP to the church office (940.564.5594). Children 4 and under will be in the nursery.  Childcare will be provided for children in grades K-6.
I would like for us to have at least 30 couples come to this conference. Husbands, your wives are wanting you to take the lead on this. Let’s try to meet the goal of 30 couples. We are more than halfway there. Click the link here to sign up.

5. FBCOU is going well. If you aren’t attending the course, please re-join. We have two sessions left, rather than three. We are having to cut the course short because we will be ordaining Dan Vanarsdall as a deacon on October 10. Our FBCOU class this week (9/26) will cover the following values found in chapters 6 and 7: Self Awareness, Balance, and Humor. The next session will be held on October 17, and will cover chapters 7 and 8: Encouragement, Perseverance, and Listening. We will not have FBCOU on October 3 because of the marriage conference.

6. Tomorrow is See You at the Pole. Be in prayer for the students who will be leading this event tomorrow at the Jr. High and High School.

7. Finally, let me give you something to listen to that will encourage you. This past week I sat down with Jeff and Denise Harmon and we talked about Jeff’s bout with COVID and his experience being a long-hauler with continuing issues over one year later. You can listen to the first part here and second part here.

Have a great rest of the week and I hope to see you tomorrow as we celebrate God’s goodness to Neil Larimore and then on Sunday as we finish our study of John chapter 6.

I love you!
