What the Bible Teaches About Jesus

Some of the last words Jesus ever said on earth to his followers are found in Matthew 28:18-20:

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

A disciple is a learner.  In the days of Jesus, people would follow certain teachers around as they learned from them.  Those followers were called disciples.  Jesus commands the church to go and make disciples of Jesus everywhere.
Disciples follow a teacher because they believe the teacher knows the best way to live.  They believe he has the answers to the important questions.  There are many big questions in life, but there are four that we all want answered:  Why is there something instead of nothing?  Why am I here?  What is my purpose?  What happens when I die?

At First Baptist Church of Olney, we believe the answers to those questions is a person.  His name is Jesus.  We believe he is the teacher who has the answers.  He knows the best way to live because he made life itself.  We are disciples of Jesus who desire to see others give Jesus the honor and glory that he deserves.

The good news about Jesus is called the Gospel.  You may be familiar with that word.  In our nation, that word has been misused and abused to the point where there is much confusion over exactly what Jesus was doing when he came from heaven to earth.  In short, we are separated and alienated from God because of sin.  Every person is a sinner with an incurable evil heart.  Because God is a perfect Judge, he must punish every sin ever committed. Nevertheless, because of God’s great love for the World, he sent Jesus, his only son, into our midst for the purpose of making peace between us and God by receiving the punishment for sins on behalf of all sinners who repent and put their faith in Christ.

Recently, a group of disciples who are gifted in the area of filmmaking produced a movie that explains the Gospel directly from the Bible.  The film also shows some of the misconceptions people have about the Gospel in America.  The first hour of the movie is available to view for free.  If you would like to see the rest of the film, you can rent it for just a few dollars by clicking here.   If you can’t afford to rent the film, contact the church and we will buy you a copy.
